Thanksgiving is a very big deal in the United States. It takes place on the fourth Thursday of November and celebrates the end of the harvest season, giving thanks for bountiful harvests.
It seems a limited strange to citizen in the Uk to celebrate a holiday so close to Christmas, but Thanksgiving is undoubtedly based on a European celebrations, mixed with Native American ones. The first American Thanksgiving celebration can be traced back to 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, so it has a long history.

It became an valid holiday in 1863 when, while the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving on November 26th. Thanksgiving is now part of the larger American holiday season, comprising Christmas and New Years and is part of the Big Six holidays in the States. These are those already mentioned and Memorial Day, Labor Day and Independence Day.
Food plays a big part in the celebrations, as you would expect from what was originally a harvest festival. Much like the English celebration of Christmas, the traditional American Thanksgiving supper comprises a starter, a main course usually spicy turkey with an array of side dishes followed by dessert. Dessert often offers a range of distinct dishes as Thanksgiving get-togethers can involve a lot of friends and family!
Starters are ordinarily soups and salads, but it’s perfectly suitable to mix it up a limited bit. Alternatives could be sage and cranberry crab cakes, Greek salad skewers, bacon-wrapped ginger soy scallops or very uncomplicated spicy maple walnuts. Your imagination is the only real limit when it comes to the first course!
The main course, however, has to be turkey, especially if you’re sticking to tradition. What you serve that turkey with is a distinct story though.
